Travel Tips - Tips for Getting Airline Upgrades
  • The quickest way to receive an upgrade is to be on an airlines frequent flier program. Airlines like loyal customers and usually reward them with preferred treatment and cheaper tickets.
  • Taking a flight during non-peak hours late at night or on a holiday will give you a better chance of getting an upgrade since fewer people generally take theses flights. This also holds true for midweek early morning flights and, if you your schedule permits, flights with a couple of layovers.
  • Lots of people want to be upgraded so you need to get in line as early as possible to take advantage of its limited availability. Find out when the airline opens up “the window” and be the first in line. Some airlines let you upgrade right as soon as you book your flight, while others have a set amount of time before departure.
  • The more first class or business seats available on a flight, the better chance you have of getting one if it’s open. Try to take flights that have large first class and business sections.
  • Airline employees have a lot of clout when it comes to where you can sit on an airplane. If you approach them with a friendly attitude, it can make all the difference in getting upgraded to a nicer section of the plane. Also, most first class passengers aren’t usually wearing cut off jeans with a tank top, so be nice and dress the part.
  • If you aren’t in a hurry, get bumped. Volunteering your seat on an overbooked flight will get you discounted tickets, sometimes cash, and sometimes in first class.
